Grants

South Ward Community Schools Initiative-$10,000,000

The Foundation for Newark’s Future and its funders have committed to providing up to $10m in funds for a community-driven community schools process with the Newark Public Schools, the City of Newark, and the Strong Healthy Communities Initiative as our partners. The FNF issued a $600,000 planning grant in the beginning of 2016 to support school selection, community needs assessments, community engagement, and the creation of an inclusive community schools vision for the city that will be piloted in the South Ward.

New Paths Newark - $2,700,000

New Paths Newark is a program aimed at helping those impacted by layoffs during the current NPS administration (2011-present) to continue their education and pursue new career pathways.Fully funded by FNF and managed by the Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ), New Paths Newark provides tuition assistance, living subsidies, and completion incentives to eligible participants who complete an Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, or Special Certification at any public, accredited New Jersey college or university. CFNJ will help participants identify the best academic program for their career ambitions and maximize individual success throughout the course of study, and will provide guidance in job placement at program completion.

Opportunity Youth Network- $2,500,000

The Foundation for Newark’s Future and its funders have committed to providing up to $2.5m in funds for the creation of an intermediary organization that re-engages disengaged or “opportunity youth” in meaningful educational and career training experiences. The FNF provided a $600,000 planning grant at the beginning of 2016 that will allow partners including the Newark Public Schools, the City of Newark, the Newark City of Learning Collaborative, and others to create a business plan for the intermediary and begin to engage community based organizations and community development corporations in technical assistance and capacity building to increase the number of programs available to opportunity youth.

PENewark – $2,034,866

This funding facilitated a public will-building campaign that engaged the Newark community in conversations about education reform.

City of Newark Summer Youth Employment Program - $1,813,341

FNF’s contribution will enable the city to provide summer jobs and internships to 2,300 Newark youth in the private and public sectors, working in corporate, business, government, education, and nonprofit sites throughout the City. In addition to meaningful employment for Newark youth, our grant is seeding a new summer employment model that diversifies children’s experiences and expands their horizons. Through a partnership with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), 200 youth will participate in classes on landscape and architecture design and coding. In partnership with Rutgers - Newark and the Newark City of Learning Collaborative, 800 youth will receive one day a week leadership training focusing on college knowledge, financial literacy, arts, wellness, etc.

Newark City of Learning Collaborative (Rutgers - Newark Cornwall Center) - $1,500,000

Newark City of Learning Collaborative is a citywide, multi-sector network of more than 60 institutions charged with increasing by 2025 the number of Newark residents with postsecondary degrees. Specifically, the goal is to progress from 17 percent of the city’s current population (29,000 individuals) to 25 percent (50,000 individuals, accounting for projected growth of Newark’s population).

NPS Parent Call Center – $400,000

Funding to support NPS in creating one place for parents to call to answer school related questions, and proactively reach out to the community.

Shared Campus Grants – $350,000

Funding to support NPS in facilitating easier transition and greater cooperation among schools at shared campus sites.

Support Center for Nonprofit Management - $251,500

A Community Based Organization Capacity Building Program that will provide 15 Newark community based organization with on-site coaching, technical assistance, and strategic planning to ensure their long-term success in serving children in Newark in a variety of environments.

Back to School 2015 – $250,000

A partnership with the Newark Public Schools, the City of Newark, the United Way, and a number of Newark community based and faith organizations to sponsor a series of back to school community events. This includes back to school festivals in various Newark neighborhoods with free book bags, books, and health screenings and a community beautification project at ten Newark public schools in partnership with the district, the city, and community partners.

National Equity Project - $175,000

The National Equity Project (NEP), is a not for profit that has extensive experience in working with educational leaders and the key stakeholders in communities to build culture, conditions and competencies for excellence and equity in public schools. NEP will be a key partner in ensuring that FNF and its partners authentically engage the community in public education in Newark.

Newark 350 - $150,000

Newark 350 celebrates the 350th anniversary of the City of Newark with educational and cultural events throughout the year. The FNF is proud to join with our funding colleagues and the whole Newark community to support this momentous occasion. Our grant will provide general support to Newark 350 and will also fund the creation of a Newark history curriculum to be taught within the Newark Public Schools.

iReform – $150,000

Funds to support the Parent Academies of iReform, a new organization founded to educate, empower and mobilize Newark parents and community members to support bold changes that will ensure a high quality education for their child.

BRICK – $125,000

A Family Service Hub will be created to operate under the newly-created South Ward Children’s Alliance. The Family Service Hub will coordinate high quality neighborhood services for children attending South Ward schools and their families.

Equity Grants at Shared Campus Sites – $110,000

Purchase of items such as Smart Boards, air conditioners, and furniture to ensure equity at district schools sharing campus sites with charter schools.

Institute for Community Peace – $100,000

Establishment and facilitation of a Community Advisory Board to incorporate community voice into FNF’s work.

Rutgers University - Newark Institute for Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience – $100,000

The Foundation for Newark’s Future made this contribution in honor of the legacy of the late Clement A. Price to rename the institute in his honor and support its endowed chair.

United Way of Essex and West Hudson – $100,000

The Foundation for Newark’s Future contributed to a fund, managed by the United Way, to assist community based organizations with their work to serve areas of the Newark community affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Council of New Jersey Grantmakers - $95,000

In 2013 and 2014, FNF joined with other Newark local funders to support the operation of the Office of the Newark Philanthropic Liaison, a partnership between the City of Newark and the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers.

Newark Mentoring Movement – $80,000

FNF is providing startup funding to Newark Mentoring Movement, a new organization that will provide a collective support network to the many mentoring programs in Newark.

Center for Education and Juvenile Justice - $50,000

FNF is providing this funding to create a multimedia, interactive website focused on the Civil Rights movement in the North with a particular focus on Newark. The website will be housed at Rutgers University - Newark

The New School - $30,000

FNF is providing the New School with a planning grant to develop a website for Newark parents that will give them authoritative, independent news and information on the public school options that are available to their children.

Latino Institute – $25,000

This grant provides support for the Latino Institute’s Ninth Annual Latino Education Conference. The grant dollars will be used for conference planning and follow-up workshops for parents of Newark students.

Willing Heart Community Care Center – $25,000

A grant to support the start of the Willing Heart Community Care Center’s scholarship for Newark students who are accepted to college but have financial need and show both academic excellence and care and service to their community.
