Back to School 2015 – $250,000
A partnership with the Newark Public Schools, the City of Newark, the United Way, and a number of Newark community based and faith organizations to sponsor a series of back to school community events. This includes back to school festivals in various Newark neighborhoods with free book bags, books, and health screenings and a community beautification project at ten Newark public schools in partnership with the district, the city, and community partners.
The National Equity Project (NEP), is a not for profit that has extensive experience in working with educational leaders and the key stakeholders in communities to build culture, conditions and competencies for excellence and equity in public schools. NEP will be a key partner in ensuring that FNF and its partners authentically engage the community in public education in Newark.
Newark 350 celebrates the 350th anniversary of the City of Newark with educational and cultural events throughout the year. The FNF is proud to join with our funding colleagues and the whole Newark community to support this momentous occasion. Our grant will provide general support to Newark 350 and will also fund the creation of a Newark history curriculum to be taught within the Newark Public Schools.
Funds to support the Parent Academies of iReform, a new organization founded to educate, empower and mobilize Newark parents and community members to support bold changes that will ensure a high quality education for their child.
BRICK – $125,000
A Family Service Hub will be created to operate under the newly-created South Ward Children’s Alliance. The Family Service Hub will coordinate high quality neighborhood services for children attending South Ward schools and their families.
Equity Grants at Shared Campus Sites – $110,000
Purchase of items such as Smart Boards, air conditioners, and furniture to ensure equity at district schools sharing campus sites with charter schools.
Establishment and facilitation of a Community Advisory Board to incorporate community voice into FNF’s work.
The Foundation for Newark’s Future made this contribution in honor of the legacy of the late Clement A. Price to rename the institute in his honor and support its endowed chair.
The Foundation for Newark’s Future contributed to a fund, managed by the United Way, to assist community based organizations with their work to serve areas of the Newark community affected by Hurricane Sandy.
In 2013 and 2014, FNF joined with other Newark local funders to support the operation of the Office of the Newark Philanthropic Liaison, a partnership between the City of Newark and the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers.
FNF is providing startup funding to Newark Mentoring Movement, a new organization that will provide a collective support network to the many mentoring programs in Newark.
Center for Education and Juvenile Justice - $50,000
FNF is providing this funding to create a multimedia, interactive website focused on the Civil Rights movement in the North with a particular focus on Newark. The website will be housed at Rutgers University - Newark
FNF is providing the New School with a planning grant to develop a website for Newark parents that will give them authoritative, independent news and information on the public school options that are available to their children.
This grant provides support for the Latino Institute’s Ninth Annual Latino Education Conference. The grant dollars will be used for conference planning and follow-up workshops for parents of Newark students.
A grant to support the start of the Willing Heart Community Care Center’s scholarship for Newark students who are accepted to college but have financial need and show both academic excellence and care and service to their community.
